These pictures were taken on June 7th, 2010 in our back yard. Getting good, interesting shots of these guys is very difficult. For instance on these shots I was trying to get the flower and the bird in focus. I was using a Canon 40D with a 100-400mm lens. Camera settings were f8, 1/8000 of a second, ISO=800, focal length of 400mm using a flash with a better beamer attached and it was sunny. What I didn't achieve was getting the flourescent red on his neck and I didn't manage to stop movement of his wings, but I'll keep trying until I get it right.

These pictures were not taken by me. They were taken by a friend of mine, Lynn Lasook. He has always maintained that he has no interest in birds unless you can eat them. Well, he got interested in this one because she built a nest right on his bike and now he's complaining that he can't go riding. Lynn, if you had used your bike more often, the Robin wouldn't have built its nest there. Looks good on you Lynn, maybe we'll make a bird photographer out of you after all LOL. Oh, I did do a bit of touchup work on his photos.

Barn Swallow

These pictures were taken on May 8th, 2010 at Rondeau Provincial Park. These guys were flying all over the place and the only place they would land was on the ground. I wanted a picture sitting on a branch, so I took my Ipod on a Barn Swallow bird call and set the speaker under a small tree. It worked. They kept flying around the tree and finally on landed just above the speaker. He sure was curious and kept looking down at the speaker.

These guys are really hard to photograph because most of the time, they're quite high up in a tree and when they do come down lower, they move so quickly that it's hard to get the camera focussed on him before he moves.

This picture was taken on May 9th, 2010 at Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario. Other birds don't like Screech Owls very much and will mob him if he comes out during the day. This guy was sleeping in his little hole when he heard something outside and came out to investigate. He was only out of his hole for about 20 seconds when a Robin attacked him and hit him a terrific blow on the head. Although I didn't get a shot of the Robin, the last picture show the Owl making a hasty retreat into his hole after the hit.

This one has been playing havoc in our back yard as we have a couple feeders that many small birds love. Unfortunately, this guy has noticed this and has been visiting our back yard quite frequently. I'm hoping that he moves on soon.

It wasn't a very comfortable position, but it was worth it as it gives you the perspective of what the duck sees while swimming around.

Black Skimmer

These pictures were taken on February 20th, 2010 at the beach in Port Aransas, Texas. The Black Skimmer is a very unique bird. If you look at his beak, the lower mandible is much longer than the upper. What they do to feed is fly very low over the water and drop the lower mandible into the water so that it skims the water surface. Any small minnows will then be scooped up. They normally feed in early mornings or late afternoons but will sometimes even feed at night.

These pictures were taken on March 23rd, 2010 at Fountain, Florida. I was using an iPod with external speakers and had a recording of bluebird songs. I had the speakers set up very close to a perch that I wanted him to land on. I spent about 10 hours playing their song and during that time he only landed on my perch twice. The bluebirds did enjoy listening to the song though as they would sit there on the electrical wires for hours listening to it. Oh well, at least I got a couple fairly good shots.

These pictures were taken on February 19th, 2010 at Choke Canyon State Park. Choke Canyon is a State Park that naturalists should just love. On the one afternoon that I was there with my friend, Larry Johnson, we had close-up views of a flock of wild Turkeys, 20 or 30 White Tailed Deer, Red Tailed Hawks, Crested Caracara plus the Northern Jacana. Unfortunately, I had problems with my camera and although I got some so so shots, they weren't as good as they should have been. Those pictures follow. For those who might be interested, there is also camping at Choke Canyon and the sites are very spacious, so if you're looking for a quiet vacation with lots of space between campsites, and want to observe lots of wildlife, you might want to consider Choke Canyon.

Northern Jacana

These pictures were taken on February 19th, 2010 at Choke Canyon State Park, Texas. This bird is rarely seen in Texas, but is very unique. Although the pictures don't show it, they have very long toes and can walk across lilly pads. In Jamaica, they are know as the Jesus bird as they appear to be able to walk on water.
