These pictures were taken between April 21st and 25th, 2009 in our back yard. Although they're called "Purple" Finch, they aren't really. The male shows a lot of red especially during breeding season. The female doesn't have any red, see bottow picture.

never seen a bird like the red neck...amazing.
I'm with Arti here in never having seen a "purple" Finch. Having seen the red coloring of even the most lackluster male, the female coloring is a definite letdown!
