Bare-throated Tiger Heron
These pictures were taken on January 4th, 2010 at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park Mission, Texas. This Tiger Heron was first spotted on December 21st, 2009 and has been seen on most days since then. It is the first Bare-throated Tiger Heron ever documented in the United States. Every night he flies to a roosting area on the south side of the canal and each morning he flies to the grassy area along the canal and behind the State Park buildings. The main part of his diet seems to be rats he has been seen eating them and some people have even been lucky enough to get pictures of him/her catching and swallowing a rat.
