Green Heron

This photo was taken 20th May, 2007 in our back yard. We have been lucky in that this is the second year that we have had a pair of Green Heron's nesting fairly close to our pond. They are frequent visitors to the pond where they find an abundance of frogs, minnows, tadpoles and other tasty treats which they prefer. They actually have a fairly long neck which extends when they're in the attack mode.

Black Crowned Night Heron

This pictures was taken on 27th December, 2006 at the Edinburg, Texas World Birding Center. Black Crowned Night Herons usually begin feeding around dusk and will sit motionless for long periods waiting for a frog or fish to come his way.

The hunter

This is a Tricolored Heron in the hunt mode. The picture was taken on 23 March 2006 at Port Aransas. I was standing on the board walk watching him as he walked very quickly up and down, occassionally shooting his neck forward to catch a small fish or insect.
