American Tree Sparrow

These pictures were taken on April 21st & 24th April, 2009 in our back yard. These guys breed and spend the summer in the far north and spend the winters in southern Canada and mid to northern United States. In the summer, they eat nothing but insects and animal matter. In the winter they eat nothing but seeds and plant matter.

Fred, how is it that the shape of the crown is so greatly varied between these two American Tree Sparrows? (The topmost resembles a sort of miniaturized Bufflehead!)
